Fire Extinguisher Refilling in Surat
An extinguisher that has been used, even for a few seconds, is no longer reliable. We refill and recharge ABC dry powder, CO₂, mechanical foam and water extinguishers, and check pressure, seals, hose and horn before the unit goes back on its bracket.
Why a half-used extinguisher is an empty one
Portable extinguishers are stored under pressure. Once the valve has been opened, that pressure starts to bleed away — and a unit that reads slightly low today may not discharge at all in six months. The same applies to a unit that has never been used but has been sitting on a bracket for years: seals harden, powder cakes, and gauges stick.
This is the most common fire safety failure we see on site. The equipment is present, mounted and visible, and it does not work. Refilling on a schedule is what prevents it.
What we do when a unit comes in
- Discharge and inspect. The unit is emptied and the cylinder examined for corrosion, dents and damage to the neck and valve.
- Refill with the correct agent. ABC powder, CO₂, mechanical foam or water, to the capacity the cylinder is rated for.
- Replace seals and safety pin. So it is obvious at a glance whether the unit has been touched since it was serviced.
- Pressurise and check. The gauge is verified against the correct operating range and the unit is checked for leaks.
- Check hose, horn and nozzle. A perished hose or cracked CO₂ horn makes an otherwise full extinguisher unusable.
When to have extinguishers refilled
- After any discharge, however brief — including accidental or test use.
- When the pressure gauge needle sits outside the green band.
- At the interval set by the manufacturer for that type of extinguisher.
- If the safety seal is broken or missing.
- If the cylinder shows corrosion, or the hose or horn is damaged.
Keeping cover while units are away
A site should not be left unprotected during servicing. Tell us before we start and we can plan the work in batches, so only part of the site is uncovered at any time, or discuss replacement units to stand in. For premises with many extinguishers this is usually handled as part of an annual maintenance contract, where the schedule is agreed in advance.
We refill extinguishers regardless of who originally supplied them, subject to the condition of the cylinder. If a unit is beyond safe service we will tell you so rather than refill it — and we can supply a replacement.
